Memory efficient adaptation of vector quantizers to time-varying channels

چکیده

Channel-optimized vector quantization (COVQ) is approximated by the novel channel-adaptive scaled vector quantization (CASVQ). This new method uses a reference codebook that is optimal for one specific channel condition. However, for a bit error rate being different from the design assumption for the reference codebook, all codevectors are scaled by a common factor, which depends on the channel condition. It is shown by simulations that a performance close to that of COVQ can be achieved in many practically important situations. Without a significant increase in complexity, the new CASVQscheme can be adapted to time-varying channels by adjusting the scaling factor to the current bit error probability. Another advantage is that only one codebook needs to be stored for all error probabilities, while for COVQ either the performance degrades significantly due to channel mismatch, or a large set of codebooks must be available at the encoder and the decoder. Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die kanaloptimierte Vektorquantisierung (COVQ) durch eine neuartige kanaladaptiv skalierbare Vektorquantisierung (CASVQ) approximiert. Dabei verwendet dieser neue Ansatz ein Referenz-Codebuch, das für einen bestimmten Kanalzustand optimal entworfen wurde. Unterscheidet sich die Bitfehlerrate auf dem Kanal von derjenigen, die zum Entwurf des Referenzcodebuchs verwendet wurde, werden alle Codevektoren mit einem gemeinsamen Faktor skaliert, der vom Kanalzustand abhängt. Simulationen zeigen, dass in vielen praktischen Fällen eine Leistungsfähigkeit erreicht wird, die nur wenig schlechter als die von COVQ ist. Ohne nennenswerte Erhöhung der Komplexität kann der neue CASVQ-Ansatz durch Wahl des Skalierungsfaktors in Abhängigkeit von der aktuellen Bitfehlerwahrscheinlichkeit an zeitvariante Kanäle angepasst werden. Ein weiterer Vorteil ist, dass nur ein Codebuch für alle Bitfehlerwahrscheinlichkeiten gespeichert werden muss. Für COVQ nimmt dagegen entweder die Leistungsfähigkeit bei nicht vorhandener Anpassung an den Kanalzustand stark ab, oder eine große Anzahl von Codebüchern muss im Encoder und im Decoder verfügbar sein.
